Recce - Lakes in a Day

Recce

For 2019 there are 3 Recce days. On 6th April from Ambleside to Cartmel, 13th July Threlkeld to Ambleside and on 14th September from Caldbeck to Threlkeld.

Format for the day – we will divide into small groups and each will be led by an experienced navigator who will guide you along the route, pointing out route options, navigation aids, river crossings, descending the tricky bits etc. Please treat this as a navigation exercise rather than a training run and dress appropriately. There may be frequent stops for navigation discussions, so extra layers/windproofs are advisable.

Maps – we will supply you with a map with the route highlighted, in a sealtight plastic bag (weatherproof).

Kit required – please bring suitable clothing for a day in the hills and any food and drink you may need for the day.

Ambleside to Cartmel

Navigation is tricky on this section but the views are really are amazing. We aim to split the group into smaller groups (1:10 ratio), each led by an experienced ultra runner. We will provide transport from Cartmel to Ambleside and provide a lunch stop at Finisthwaite village hall.

The recce will follow all of the 3rd and 4th sections and we will finish off by the school in Cartmel for a Q&A. Timing depends on how fast your group are moving, but should be no later than late afternoon.

The cost for this recce is £35, which includes transport from Cartmel to Ambleside.

Date – Saturday 6th April, enter online (separate event from Lakes in a Day)

Meet – Cartmel High School.

Parking – There is a layby and on street parking by the school, please park sensibly do not park in front of properties even if legal to do so.

Transfer to Ambleside – the coach will leave from outside the school at 7am (its potentially a long day) take you to the start in Ambleside. If you want to meet in Ambleside and not take the coach, please let me know, so we are not holding the coach waiting for you to arrive. Remember if you decide to do this you will have to find your own way back to Ambleside.

Threlkeld to Ambleside

This is a big day out (and arguably warrants an event in itself).  Please make sure to bring enough food to keep you going for the day also pending how hot it is means to carry at least a litre of water.. quite possibly more.  There is only one location to access water.

The recce will follow all of the 2nd section and we will finish off at Squires the coffee shop for a Q&A. Timing depends on how fast your group are moving, but could easily take all day.

The cost for this recce is £35, which includes transport from Ambleside to Threlkeld.

Date – Saturday 13th July, enter online (separate event from Lakes in a Day)

Meet – Ambleside Bus Station.

Parking – suggest using the Under Loughrigg road for parking.

Transfer to Threlkeld – the coach will leave from the bus station in Ambleside at 7am (its potentially a long day) take you to the Cricket Club in Threlkeld. If you want to meet in Ambleside and not take the coach, please let me know, so we are not holding the coach waiting for you to arrive. Remember if you decide to do this you will have to find your own way back to Threlkeld.

Caldbeck to Threlkeld

Judged by most to be the most technical section with some tricky navigation. We aim to split the group into smaller groups (1:10 ratio), each led by an experienced ultra runner, who knows this area well and will be able to give you advice on route choice and navigation pointers across this challenging section. We will provide transport from Threlkeld to the start and then head back over the hill to the cafe in Threlkeld for a well deserved cuppa and chance to discuss aspects of the route.

The recce will follow all of the 1st section (Caldbeck to Threlkeld) and we will finish off in the Cafe at Threlkeld for a Q&A and hot drinks. Timing depends on how fast your group are moving, but should be no later than lunchtime.

The cost for this recce is £35, which includes transport from Threlkeld to the start.

Date – Saturday 14th September, enter online (separate event from Lakes in a Day)

Meet – Threlkeld Village Hall CA12 4RX (only follow sat navs to Threlkeld and then look for signs for the village hall & cafe, which is on the main street). There are public toilets at the rear of the village hall.

Parking – Please do not park behind the village hall. There is another car park in the village on Blease Road.

Transfer to Caldbeck – the coach will leave the village hall soon after 8am and take you to the start in Caldbeck. If you want to meet at Caldbeck and not take the coach, please let me know, so we are not holding the coach waiting for you to arrive. Remember if you decide to do this you will have to find your own way back to Caldbeck.
